Small business owners are forever trying to come up with new ways to bring in customers. One novel way that has caught on already with a number of savvy marketers is the use of surveys to bring attention to their business. This article will discuss the use of surveys in your marketing efforts and give you some ideas on what they should include and how to use them.

Today's consumer is inundated by an endless stream of advertising messages they do their level best to ignore. For you, the advertiser, the challenge is how to put your message before your target market in such a way they will pay attention to it. One way to do this is to involve them in the business by asking what they think. Most people are happy to offer their opinion but are seldom asked.

Asking people what they think has the added benefit of the people who respond remembering what they were asked. They will do so since they will have surely given their answers, and your business, some thought when deciding how to answer.

There are many things you can survey people about. What you want to do is phrase the questions you ask in such a way that the respondent needs to think about your business in order to answer. For example, if you own a corner grocery, ask people what types of products they would like to see you carry. Offer them a choice of different brands and remind them of the ones you already carry. This will not only give you an idea of what other items to stock but firmly place what you do offer in their mind.

Some things you can survey people about in addition to what products they would like to see could include: how often they shop with you, your competition, online, or from catalogs. You might ask if they would like to see you open on weekends or longer hours during the week. You could ask them to rate your service and compare it to that of your competition.

Thank them for their participation by offering them a gift certificate for one of your products or services. This is cheap for you, it makes them aware of what you sell, and it gets them to think of what you sell as valuable - after all they had to do something to receive it.
