Facebook is one of my all time favorite networking tools. As the internet has evolved and as I've tried many different marketing approaches for my network marketing business, Facebook is by far my favorite.

Understanding the purpose of Facebook is key in creating your own networking strategy. The network began as a university communication system. It was founded by a Harvard student and was intended for students to communicate with one another.

The network first grew to include other college campuses, then high school campuses and was finally opened to the general public.

Today, you can connect with old friends, give a virtual birthday gift to someone and search for new friends via their "friend finder" tool.

When you use the network to truly connect with others, you'll find yourself with an abundance of both customer leads and also new team member leads.

I do get sales pitches on a regular basis and those are the people I quietly remove from my list of friends. I really have never met anyone who enjoys getting sales pitches, whether via email, on the phone or through a social networking system.

There are so many ways to meet new people once you create your account. In the upper right hand corner the system makes friend recommendations for you. Invest some time, look at the profiles (if available) of those being recommended and then send a short note with your friend request. Tell them who you are and how you found them.

There are thousands of groups you can join and participate in. In the lower left hand corner are what appear to be two people talking. It looks like a silhouette of people. When you click on that, you'll find categories and sub-categories. Choose some groups that meet your interests and join. Participate in the discussions and then make some friend requests. You can let them know you too are a member of the group they belong to.

I suggest staying away from the "add me" groups. You'll end up with a lot of people you really don't wish to be friends with.

Stay away from ads. Don't put ads in your status updates. I've talked to many people who share my thoughts. They either delete the "friend" who always advertises or they put the person on ignore. If people are ignoring you, you're not going to make a connection.

Don't email (yes there is an email system within Facebook) ads to others. When I see an ad in my email, I hit delete and then often delete the friend. I'm just not looking for relationships that are one way, especially when the one way communication is an ad.

Use the system for its intended purpose, a communication system. Talk to people. When you truly invest in a two way relationship, you'll end up with new customers and new team members.
